This time of year, I photograph many families welcoming new little ones, and one of the first questions I’m often asked is: Should we do an in-home or studio newborn session? Both options create beautiful, meaningful images — they just tell slightly different stories.

An in-home session is perfect if you love the way your home feels and reflects your family’s style. Your home becomes the backdrop — the place you brought your baby home to — and that adds a layer of emotional depth to the photographs that can’t be recreated anywhere else.

You don’t need a picture-perfect house; what matters most is the natural light and the connection between you and your baby. I’ll guide you through gentle posing and natural interactions so the result feels soft and heartfelt. These sessions often lean more toward a lifestyle feel — quiet mornings in the nursery, snuggles on the bed, feeding, and all the simple, beautiful moments that make those early days unforgettable.

• Authentic to your family and surroundings
• Comfortable and familiar for new parents
• Tells the story of “home” — where you brought your baby for the very first time

If your home doesn’t get much natural light or you’re not loving your current décor, you may prefer the consistency and brightness of the studio. And let’s be honest — those early days can feel chaotic, so not having to tidy up can sometimes be a welcome relief.

My studio sessions are a wonderful alternative for families who may be in a temporary home, have limited natural light, or simply want the ease of walking into a space where everything is ready for them.
The studio — located at my home tucked above the garage with its own private entrance — is designed specifically for newborn photography. It’s light, bright, and beautifully neutral, allowing your baby and your connection to take center stage. I keep the space warm and cozy, with soft textures and natural tones.

The studio is also equipped with all the creature comforts of home. There’s a private restroom, a small fridge stocked with drinks and snacks, and a private room for changing clothes or taking care of diaper changes. Everything is set up so that you can simply arrive, settle in, and enjoy this peaceful time with your baby.
We can photograph your baby individually and together as a family, and I often include simple, timeless setups for classic newborn portraits that will look beautiful framed or in an heirloom album.

• Perfect light and comfortable temperature every time
• No need to prepare your home — everything is ready for you
• Classic, timeless portraits in a neutral setting
• Comfortable amenities to help you relax and enjoy the experience

There’s no right or wrong choice — it really comes down to what feels most like you. Some families love the emotional intimacy of an in-home session, while others prefer the ease and simplicity of the studio. Both create beautiful keepsakes of your baby’s earliest days.
If you’re searching for Birmingham newborn photography and aren’t sure which approach fits you best, I’m always happy to talk through the options. Together, we’ll plan a session that feels natural, effortless, and full of love — because these first moments deserve to be remembered beautifully.

Whether you’re drawn to the warmth of an in-home session or the peaceful simplicity of the studio, I’d love to create something timeless for your family. Click here to inquire about your newborn session and let’s begin planning something beautiful for your baby’s first portraits.
